Black Box – John Reynolds Collaboration

1 Mar

We are in the process of expanding our Auckland studio across two levels, linked by a generous staircase. While this is under construction a sealed enclosure protects us from noise and dust, and prevents us from falling down the hole. But, until last Thursday evening, it looked like an oversized rubbish bag.

We invited renowned artist John Reynolds to collaborate with us on a collective, collaborative, temporary artwork to transform the ‘black box’. This no boundaries process promoted a lively discussion, led by Isthmus founder David Irwin on such themes as, what is art? what is design? who is the artist / who is the designer? what is the process? We are constantly asking ourselves and our collaborators these questions within our work. This was a great chance to explore things within a project of our own.

What we found was: there are no right answers, things are never black-and-white, and that opportunities lurk where you least expect.
